Johnny Limon's Cinco Playlist

Great musicians who once played at Parque Zaragoza!

East Austin native, Mr. Johnny Limon has enjoyed music performed at Parque Zaragoza since he was a kid. He's put together a playlist for you to enjoy featuring musical legends who have played on our park's stage. It's worth noting that four of the six artists featured in this playlist are included in the Austin's Tejano Walking Trail, designated a National Walking Trail in 2012, located nearby in the heart of the East Cesar Chavez and Holly neighborhoods.

So, sit back and relax or get up and dance with the familia as you listen to the fiesta classics of past Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Playlist includes:
  • The NASH HERNANDEZ ORCHESTRA
  • MANUEL "COWBOY" DONLEY Y LAS ESTRELLAS ORCHESTRA
  • The ALFONSO RAMOS ORCHESTRA
  • DAVE GUTIERREZ Y SU ORQUESTA
  • ROY MONTELONGO ORCHESTRA
  • RUBEN RAMOS and the MEXICAN REVOLUTION
And, if a song triggers a memory of a fiesta in our park, please share the story here amigosdeparquezaragoza@gmail.com.
Asking Amigos de Parque Zaragoza's Mr. Johnny Limon what he remembers, here's what he shared,

" As a young kid in the late 50's and 60's, I remember when it was the week of the Fiestas, a gentleman from the Fiesta Patrias Organization, by the name of Jose Verastigue, would come a couple days early to start getting park and stage ready. Mr. Verastigue was my Mom's Uncle. He would bring lots of little Mexican flags and red, white, and green ribbon and confetti, to decorate the stage and dance area. The city would extend the stage area, where the Fiesta Queen Candidates would stand during ceremony. As kids, we would go and help by handing Mr. Verastigue and his helper, the flags while, they were on the ladders. We would also be there when the orchestras got there and help them setup. We got a chance to bang on the drum set! My Uncle Manuel Limon played the Upright Bass for the Nash Hernandez Orchestra. During these Fiestas is where some of us kids learned to dance with our sisters and cousins."
